Before upgrading, please read the following important warnings:

Once you have your new registration code, simply follow these steps:

  1. Go to the free trial version page
  2. Click on one of the My Roots download links
  3. Download the trial version and install the MyRoots.prc file onto your handheld
  4. Run My Roots, select Register from the menu, and enter your new registration code

You do NOT need to delete the old version from your handheld before installing the new one, and you do NOT need to install the new MyRootET.pdb file.

The new version has an improved conversion utility. The old conversion utility will NOT work correctly with the new version of My Roots.

PC users:  You should go to Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and delete all occurrences of "My Roots Conversion Utility". Then download the new version's installer (MRConvert_4_00.exe) and run it.

Macintosh users:  You should download and unstuff the new version (MRConvert.sit) to a new location. If you're using OS 8/9, and the folder where you had the old conversion utility contains a file called "Palm User Folder", simply copy it to the new folder. In either case, you can then delete the old folder.

The conversion utility is a separate download also available on the free trial version page.

Having all that out of the way, there are a lot of exciting enhancements in the new version! Here is a summary of the changes:

My Roots now allows you to document the evidence you have for your genealogy data by creating sources and source citations. Every person, fact, and event can have an unlimited number of source citations, each of which can be up to 32k. You can also assess the reliability of each source citation using the standard GEDCOM quality values. For each source, you can store the title, agency, author, publication facts, and a note of up to 32k.

A powerful relationship calculator has been added to My Roots, that allows you to find relationships between blood-relatives. Unlike the competition's relationship calculators, this one displays not only a textual description of the relationship (e.g., "1st Cousin 2 times removed"), but also displays the two people's lineages so that you can see the individuals through which they are related!

Major portions of My Roots have been rewritten to make just about everything faster. For example, even if your database contains thousands of people, when you tap on a name at the List of People, the Person Detail screen will appear nearly instantaneously.

If you make extensive notes while doing research, you'll be glad to know that the maximum size of notes has been increased to 32k. Better yet, every person, fact, and event can have an unlimited number of notes, so you never have to worry about running out of space.

Due to requests from users, My Roots now allows for three given names. This makes it easier to have complete information and to differentiate between members of a large family.

By popular demand, we've added a new filtering method. In addition to filtering by Birth Location or Death Location, you can now filter by Any Location. This lets you find all the people who have ANY event or fact in a given location. For example, if you're going to Chicago, this search would let you find all people that you might want to research while you're there.

When editing a person's surname, the Soundex code is automatically updated as you make changes, so you no longer have to tap on an Update button. For added convenience, there is also a separate Soundex calculator available at the List of People screen.

DIA support, to show or hide and Graffiti input area, has been enhanced to include not only Sony OS 4 devices (NR70) and Sony OS 5 portrait mode devices (NX60), but also PalmOne devices (Tungsten T3) and Sony OS 5 landscape mode devices (UX50). It will work for all future devices that implement DIA. My Roots takes advantage of the extra space to display more information so you spend less time scrolling to find the data you need.

For detailed information, please see the updated users manual.

We hope you enjoy using the new version of My Roots!
