Upgrading My Roots to Version 4

Tapperware is pleased to announce a new release of My Roots, version 4. Note that your old registration code will not work for this new version. Please be sure to carefully read all of the following upgrade information.

An email regarding this upgrade will be sent to all registered users of My Roots at the email address we have in our records. If you need to update your email address, please send an email to support@tapperware.com.

If you purchased My Roots before October 1, 2004

The email you receive will contain a "Purchase Now" link that will let you upgrade to version 4 for only $7.95. Clicking on this link will add My Roots to your shopping cart, and will show the regular price of $24.95. Click on the "Checkout" button to go to the next screen. The next screen will contain several fields including a "Coupon" field, and your coupon code should automatically be filled in for you. Fill out the other required information, click on the "Next" button, and at the next screen, you will see that $17.00 has been deducted from the price leaving a total of only $7.95. Please make sure that at the last screen, the discount has been applied before you complete the purchase! You will be able to use this coupon only one time.

Buy the My Roots upgrade to version 4

You will then be able to go through the purchase process, but will have to manually copy and paste your coupon code into the Coupon field.

If you purchased My Roots on or after October 1, 2004

You are eligible for a free upgrade to version 4. The email you receive will contain your new registration code.

Before upgrading, please read the following important warnings:

As a precaution, make sure that you have a copy of all your data in GED format. If you don't already have GED files for your My Roots databases, use the conversion utility to create them before upgrading.

The format in which My Roots stores data is different in the new version. Therefore, if you try the upgrade but decide NOT to purchase it, you will need to delete the new version of My Roots from your handheld, re-install the old version, re-enter your old registration code, and re-import your data from your GED files.

Once you have your new registration code, simply follow these steps:

Connect your handheld to your desktop computer

In ActiveSync, go to the Tools menu and select "Add/Remove Programs"

Click on "Tapperware My Roots" and click on the Remove button (click on OK to confirm that you want to remove the old version)

Run the installer

Run My Roots on your handheld, select Register from the menu, and enter your new registration code

The new version has an improved conversion utility. The old conversion utility will NOT work correctly with the new version of My Roots. To install the new conversion utility onto your desktop computer:

Go to Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and delete the "My Roots Conversion Utility for Pocket PC"

Having all that out of the way, there are a lot of exciting enhancements in the new version! Here is a summary of the changes:

SUPPORT FOR SOURCES AND SOURCE CITATIONS

My Roots now allows you to document the evidence you have for your genealogy data by creating sources and source citations. Every person, fact, and event can have an unlimited number of source citations, each of which can be up to 32k. You can also assess the reliability of each source citation using the standard GEDCOM quality values. For each source, you can store the title, agency, author, publication facts, and a note of up to 32k.

RELATIONSHIP CALCULATOR

A powerful relationship calculator has been added to My Roots, that allows you to find relationships between blood-relatives. Unlike the competition's relationship calculators, this one displays not only a textual description of the relationship (e.g., "1st Cousin 2 times removed"), but also displays the two people's lineages so that you can see the individuals through which they are related!

IMPROVED SUPPORT FOR NOTES

If you make extensive notes while doing research, you'll be glad to know that the maximum size of notes has been increased to 32k. Better yet, every person, fact, and event can have an unlimited number of notes, so you never have to worry about running out of space.

IMPROVED FILTERING

By popular demand, we've added a new filtering method. In addition to filtering by Birth Location or Death Location, you can now filter by Any Location. This lets you find all the people who have ANY event or fact in a given location. For example, if you're going to Chicago, this search would let you find all people that you might want to research while you're there.

BETTER SOUNDEX SUPPORT

For added convenience, there is now a separate Soundex calculator available at the List of People screen.
